CONSUMER SAFETY: IMO CPC REVEALES PLANS FOR ESTABLISHMENT OF CLUBS IN SCHOOLS

The consumer protection council (CPC) Imo State says it has concluded plans to set up CONSUMER SAFETY CLUBS in all the secondary schools in the State to promote behavioural change through public enlightenment.

The Director General, Consumer Protection Council Imo state, Hon. Mrs Obioma Okafor, said this during a debate competition involving four secondary schools in Imo State, organised by the council to commemorate this year's World Consumer Rights Day Celebration. The school includes, Alvana Mordel Secondary school Owerri, Owerri Girls Secondary school, Claret Academy New Owerri and Holy Ghost College Owerri.

Mrs Okafor stated that, the council is deeply concerned about the menace of adulterated products in the State, adding that Consumer Safety Club is a programme initiated to promote behavioural change through enlightenment among the youths, to guide them against fake products and its consequences.

The establishment of this clubs in our Secondary schools have become imperative for CPC to win the war against fake and adulterated products.

"We can only build a new Nigeria by equipping our youths who are the future of this great nation with the right attitude." Our children need to have the mindset of checking the Manufacturering date, expiration date and NAFDAC registration number of every products before they purchase and also volunteer useful information that will assist CPC fight fakes. The programme is set to educate the students on the basic rights of the consumer.

Mrs Okafor further explained that the phenomenon of fake products informed the agency's decision to catch them young.

She appreciated the shared prosperity government of His Excellency, Most Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma for placing the protection of consumers high on the overall agenda of his administration. She recognized that the COVID-19 pandemic has really exposed the vulnerabilities of the global health system. Therefore, she pleaded with school management and the state ministry of Education to support this strategic initiatives.
