The group made the call in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja by its National Chairman, Prof.Sotonye Amakiri.
The group issued the statement after a meeting of its Central Working Committtee.
“Government at the centre and states must work together to reverse the growing untowards grieving among Nigerian families in order to provide a conducive environment for peaceful coexistence of Nigerians,” it said.
It called on Nigerians to shun politically-induced hatred for the ruling APC and the president as well as historical animosity among ethnic groups.
The group advised Nigerians to avoid ethnicising all crimes and criminalising ethnic groups for every perpetrated crime.
“We must exhibit the spirit of forgiveness and not support ethnic division which may cause civil war, the end of which nobody could predict.
“Every ethnic group must learn from Rwanda and how spreading fake news created big genocide among two notable tribes by saying no to the Kigali experience in Nigeria,” it said.
The group urged President Muhammadu Buhari to make unsparing examples of those advertently misrepresenting situations in Nigeria by standing firmly against dissemination of fake news.
It urged the president to send a strong warning to bandits, Boko Haram, killer herdsmen, kidnappers, armed robbers and their masterminds against their heinous crimes.
“Government must adopt tough measures to overhaul the nation’s security apparatus and confront insecurity in all its variants as well as repel actions that could lead to further disaffection and ethnic suspicions, ” it said.
The group called for urgent national conference to be attended by respected and trusted ethnic leaders, civil society leaders, labour leaders, student leaders and National Assembly members to douse growing tensions.
“The focus of the conference must be on security, national unity, economy and sustainable human development.
