In 2015, the All Progressives Congress, APC as a political party in Nigeria had its strongholds in almost the entire Northern region and in the Southwest geopolitical zone as evidenced in the general election of that year in which the party defeated the incumbent PDP President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan thereby making history as the first opposition party to defeat an incumbent President in the political annals of the country. But in the Southsouth and Southeast geopolitical zones the PDP still held sway as the political party on ground with massive followership.
The 2019 general elections in which the APC still won the presidency saw the ruling party, making serious inroads into the Southeast and Southsouth geopolitical zones as it improved on its 2015 electoral performances in these zones. But the PDP was still stronger and indomitable in the two geopolitical zones.
In Ebonyi State where Governor Umahi won his first and second terms in office as Governor under the platform of the PDP, the party was very formidable; it was unbeatable. But these qualities were only possible because Governor Umahi was part and parcel of the political party and as a world-class performing governor which the party leveraged upon to blossom, the PDP was indefatigable in the State.
Then came the change of status quo on 19th November 2020 when Governor Umahi officially declared his defection to the ruling APC, the PDP instantly became a lame duck political party.
Of a truth, while Governor Umahi's defection infused oxygen into the APC and resuscitated the political party in all ramifications, the PDP is still gasping for air to survive. This is because its fulcrum who is Governor Umahi is off and there is nothing and nobody again, holding the PDP in place anymore. The party is just wobbling and fumbling.
So, in a twist of situational irony, the PDP which boasted as the alfa and omega in Ebonyi State is now on a wheelchair while the APC which lacked the oxygen and energy to compete favorably with the PDP in elections is now waxing stronger as it bestrides the entire Ebonyi State political landscape like a colossus.
Today, the PDP lacks what it takes to even be an opposition party in Ebonyi State particularly as the party has been factionalized and consequently enmeshed in endless litigations with youths loyal to the Udeogu faction, attacking the party secretariat in the state and criminally breaking into offices, committing burglary and almost committed arson as the youths attempted setting the secretariat ablaze if not for the intervention of security agencies in the state who arrested the culprits. This shows clearly that it was governor Umahi who made the PDP what it was in Ebonyi State. Imagine that just few months after he left, the party has become so disorganized and directionless. How great the mighty fallen!
We, the supporters and loyalists of His Excellency are happy that Governor Umahi not only gave oxygen to the APC in Ebonyi State, he equally added flesh to the party membership and reunited Ebonyians more than ever before. At the rate Ebonyians and indeed the Igbo nation are embracing the APC, it leaves no one in doubt that before the 2023 general election, the Southeast geopolitical zone shall become another APC stronghold.
If only the remnants of the PDP who are fighting Governor Umahi would understand that the more they fight the Governor, the more they worsen the problems bedevilling their party, they would have long surrendered because Governor Umahi is a leader who carries all over his body the anointing of the most high God and no one who fights such a leader should expect serenity. It is obvious that God is angry with the PDP in Ebonyi State until its members retrace their steps and face real party politics devoid of vicious propaganda, antagonism, acrimony, animosity, rancour and character assassination which are counterproductive.
