The saying that government is a continuum has the import that no one administration ever exhausts every responsibility of government. It therefore suffices to say that every government or administration of a people should concentrate on one or some chosen aspect of the people’s societal life and improve upon such area since human needs and wants are insatiable.
Following this principle, the administration of Engr David Nweze Umahi who is the third executive governor of Ebonyi State has significantly earmarked some aspects of the lives of Ebonyians to improve upon. The good news is that contrary to the negative trend in African governance where the governed are promised heaven and earth with nothing delivered to them at last, Ebonyians have been fortunate in Gov Umahi because he has comprehensively delivered in all the areas he promised to serve Ebonyians.
Since infrastructure is the dynamo that powers development, His Excellency Gov Umahi has concentrated greater percentage of his energy in aggressively developing Ebonyi State. Coming on board, he quickly swung into action and swiftly began very holistic provision and upgrade of infrastructure in all parts of Ebonyi State.
In specific terms, so far, Gov Umahi has constructed over 1000kms of road across the length and breadth of Ebonyi State majority of which are on concrete rigid pavements with and estimated lifespan of over a century. As a leader with foresight, he has completed about five overhead bridges (flyovers) in strategic places in Ebonyi to cater for traffic congestions as well reduce cases of road traffic accident. Aside being one of the longest in Nigeria, the overhead bridges have been inspected and confirmed to be of quality of international acceptability. The roads and bridges are adorned with beautiful water fountains to enhance their aesthetic values. In addition to the completed ones, about two other giant flyovers are nearing completion at Ezzangbo and Uburu. Roads are similarly still being constructed at different places.
The provision of electricity and more specifically of streetlights not only at the capital city but across the 13 local government areas is a commendable effort. Aside from serving its critical infrastructural purpose, the streetlights have considerably eradicated the hitherto ugly cases of armed robbery and other criminal activities especially at nights. In fact, the urban renewal policy has successfully transformed the capital city and the adjourning towns to magnificent cities of global standards and esthetics.
In area of human empowerment, it is on record that governor Umahi has the highest number of aides in the recent political history of Nigeria. His appointment of over 1500 youths into various positions of government is not only a means of exposure to such persons but also a way of empowerment. With over 500 widows on government payroll and with intermittent giving of grants to various groups to engage in businesses and agriculture, our governor has been silently laying solid foundation for economic development of Ebonyi state. More so, provision of critical infrastructure as he has done is a prerequisite for attracting investors into the state.
To further enhance the economic base of both Ebonyians and those doing business in Ebonyi state, Gov Umahi has completed and put to use, the international market which is adjudged not just the most spacious and most beautiful but also among the most modern in history of present Nigeria. Just recently, taxation policy was reviewed to exclude those doing small and micro businesses in the state. To eradicate the stigma attached to our youths engaging in all manner of menial jobs in other cities in the country with its attendant risk consequences, our governor procured and distributed over 400 tricycles free to selected youths in the state to do engage in transport businesses.
Education is also given a pride of place as this administration has built and equipped 1block of 3 classrooms in every political ward in the state. Through his ingenuity, our governor conceived, started, completed and commissioned the King David Gifted Academy as well as the Ebonyi State Vocational College. Those institutions are now hub of talent harvest and development. There is no gain saying the fact that our tertiary institutions are not left aside in the entire educational overhaul.
Without belabouring the obvious, the security situation in Ebonyi state could best be described as watertight while just as the health sector has been receiving unprecedented attention manifesting in areas such as the construction and equipping of the only virology centre in the south-east and south-south zone of the country, the vigorous fight against the novel Covid 19 pandemic which resulted in the rehabilitation and equipping of all the 13 general hospitals in the state and the ongoing construction of the state teaching hospital at Uburu.
Religion which takes care of the soul as a critical component of the tripartite nature of man has also received the Midas touch of Engr Umahi. Being a child of grace and coming in the name of the Lord, the governor has been specially taking care of men f God in the state through diverse ways such as provision of grants for them to engage in agriculture, constant remembrance during major festivities and donation to many churches to propagate the gospel.
The administration of His Excellency Gov David Umahi has been very all inclusive and could therefore be described as being holistic. It is only apt that Ebonyians pray for and support this people-oriented administration in all ramifications to enable it deliver more for as Meister Eckhart said: “if the only prayer we say is thank you, then that would e enough”. Gov Umahi deserves a big thank you from Ebonyian.
