Imo Angels Club recently paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Vulnerable Groups, Honourable Nkechinyere Ugwu at her office. The club came with its adminstrative staff, footballers and the CEO to request for a courtesy call with First Lady Imo State, and to present the trophy they won in their first tournament in Ogun State to the Commissioner.
The club which is an all-female football club based in Owerri was founded by Lady Jane Uzor on the 28th of November 2020. The General Manager, Chuks Dike while speaking said the football club is a platform formed to support the girl child from zero to heroin, street to star. "Through its commitment and hard work, the club was invited to play in Ogun State with other female football clubs in the country." He said. According to him, the journey was not an easy one, but with hard work and dedication they made sure victory was achieved cemented with the tournament's trophy. The club went on to win the Best Defender Recognition Award of the tournament and came out as the highest goals scoring club of the football competition.
Responding, the Honourable Commissioner asked each of the players to introduce themselves. She thanked God for their commitment to winning the trophy, journey mercies to and from the tournament ground and encouraged them that it is not always the starting that counts but how that they finish as every obstacle in life is a learning tool for direction, development and progress.
The Commissioner was overjoyed with their victory and for bringing the trophy to the state because of the positive reactions it would create amongst the Imo people.
She assured them of the non-stop support of the Ministry and that their message to Her Excellency, Barrister [Mrs] Chioma Uzodimma will be immediately delivered.
The Commissioner appreciated the sacrifices they made to achieve the victory and admonished them to continue with the same commitment, stay off vices and God's willing, they would become International football stars.
Lady Jannny Uzor, who gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the club, thanked all and expressed her appreciation for the First Lady of the State and the Commissioner of the Ministry saying the government of the day did not make any mistake in appointing Honourable Nkechinyere Ugwu as the Commissioner of the Ministry. She said the footballers were in the best hands as far as the First Lady and the Commissioner are concerned and are looking forward to presenting the trophy to Imo First lady.
Presenting the trophy to the Commissioner, the goalkeeper of the club, Edwin Stella along side her striker, Kalu Onyinyechi, expressed their profound gratitude to the Commissioner and the Ministry for their continuous support. Present at the courtesy call were the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Chikodi Emenalom, the Directors, HOD's, the PRO and other staff of the ministry.
