The Special Adviser to the Imo State Governor on Maritime Transportation, Waterways Security and Harbour Matters, Prince Dr. Henry Okafor on Friday 21st May, 2021 inspected activities going on around the Onukwu Azara Egbelu - Emekuku in Owerri North LGA as well as Imo River in Obowo LGA, both in Imo State.
Okafor who at the instance of His Excellency, Gov. Hope Uzodimma, made this visit to ascertain the level of environmental damage caused by activities of dredgers and locals and also in response to calls made to his Office bothering on the annual flood menace that engulfs parts of the Malaysian Market in Obowo, and as well to interface with commuters on how to ensure security of the waterways, was accompanied by a team of his Marine Surveillance Taskforce.
He condemned the pollution of the rivers, especially the Onukwu Azara Egbelu warning that henceforth, non-state sanctioned and illegitimate activities will no longer continue on Imo waterways.
He made it clear to those doing business around those areas, that Government is now out ensure that our waterways and habour areas are secured and would no longer be hideouts for hoodlums, hard drugs takers and criminals elements in the society, stressing the resolve of the shared prosperity administration of His Excellency, Dist. Sen. Hope Uzodimma to smoke out criminals in the state.
Going forward, Okafor while interacting with the market men and women of the Malaysian Market on the damages resulting from the overflow of Imo River annually in the past, assured the market people that government will work out modalities to now mitigate and minimize wreckages caused by the flooding as well as provide relief.
Okafor used the opportunity familiarize with the leadership of the Malaysian Market in Obowo, that spans through the bank of Imo River and also the leadership of the Sand Dredgers at Onukwu Azara Egbelu and exchanged correspondence with them as well as extend hands of partnership and collaboration to ensuring effective and robust Maritime surveillance on those waterways.
