On Monday June 6th, 2021, there was a one day FGM programme review meeting with civil society organization network and selected young people. The meeting was to review the female genital mutilation campaign in Imo state with a call that all hands must be on deck to completely put an end to female genital mutilation, FGM. The programme was organized by the Ministry of women Affairs and Vulnerable groups in collaborations with the United Nations International Children's fund at Star Arrival hotel off Port Harcourt road,Owerri
In her address, the Hon. commissioner for Women Affairs and Vulnerable group, Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu thanked UNICEF for their partnership with the ministry and observed with dismay that the rights of the children, women and girls are still trampled upon every minute of the day despite government's efforts to enforce their rights and promote their welfare .
The commissioner who was ably represented by the head of department, child development, Mr Benjamin Amaefule charged all to intergrate female genital mutilation to their private organization activities and urged them to strengthen the referral system and collaboration to ensure the goals of making Imo state female genital mutilation free. She highlighted the objective and purpose of the training to include;
Increase knowledge about the efforts to end female genital mutilation in Nigeria especially in Imo state.
Increase knowledge of ending VAC/VAWG and COVID 19 prevention & risk mitigation.
Increase capacity of monitor and report FGM in Imo state.
She informed the participants that the Ministry under the office of Her Excellency, Barr. Mrs Chioma Uzodimma has put strong machineries in place to ensure that the right of children, particularly the girl child is protected..
In his address, the UNICEF consultant for Imo and Ebonyi states, Mr Mbakwem informed the participants on the essence of the meeting which was towards the actualization of ending female Genital Mutilation in Imo state. He charged the participants on the need to step up actions and strategies towards ending FGM in Imo state and make the state free from the obnoxious practices.
The ministry in collaboration with UNICEF will continue its training in several communities this year. TO GOD BE ALL GLORY.
