Hon. (Comrade) Chinedu Ogah, OON who is Representing Ikwo/Ezza-South Federal Constituency for Ebonyi State in the National Assembly today in his townhome said that only true democracy will end insecurity and violence in Nigeria.
In his speech, "if the masses are allowed to elect their leaders freely, insecurity will be a resolved issue and thing of the past in the country".
While addressing the press for this year’s democracy day celebration, Ogah noted that every leader elected by the masses must be honored by the people and the leaders would understand their challenges. He described the imposition of leaders on the masses as a major cause of insecurity in the country and called for an end to the ugly practice.
The lawmaker who commended President Muhammadu Buhari for tolerating oppositions in the country and his developmental strides said that opposition is the beauty of democracy.
He further maintained that the southeast zone under President Buhari's administration has witnessed more democratic dividends than any other government in the country.
“As a democratic government, people should be allowed to elect their leaders. If the people elect their leaders, the insecurity people cry of will be a thing of the past. Every leader elected by the masses must be honored by the masses but when there is manipulation and you stay inside the hotel room to elect a legislator and such a legislator is unable to reach his constituency, by the time he tries to impose himself on the people, resistance will come and insecurity will start. So, whether you are a Governor or a ward Councilor, once there is a breach of due process, ensure that the correct thing is adopted.
“There is a lot to celebrate, we are celebrating sustenance of democracy for 22 years, and we are celebrating "taking power back to the grassroots" courtesy of President Muhammed Buhari.
“I commend the leadership of the Speaker of Nigeria's 9th National Assembly, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, for his effort in demonstrating true leadership over this two years of his leadership, quality representation, and also his unrelenting effort in resolving all the challenges facing Nigeria's democracy
Especially, I want to commend my governor, His Excellency Chief Engr Dave Nweze Umahi, who is the governor of Ebonyi State for his unflinching love and unceasing effort to ensure there is peace and security in Ebonyi State. He urged everyone to be alert and contribute to address security issues in the state and report any related cases of insecurity and threat to the security agencies. " It is through this that peace and development will be attained. There is no gain in crisis and fighting ourselves. nothing is rewarding in killing your brother or sister".
"I want to plead with all those who have been hurt in one way or the other to sheath their swords and sue for peace, unity, and love. It is through dialogue that peace and love can be enthroned and not through killings and destruction of perceived rivals and assets".
In the same manner, "I commend all our security agents for what they are doing to make sure that they secure this nation but we still urge people to do what is needful, everything should not be left for the government alone whether you are a town union president, local government chairman, you must provide security for the people, security agents are visitors and it's you that know the terrain of your place, know how your place can be secured so, we need information, very good information that will help the security agents to perform their duties perfectly well because Mr. president and Gov. Umahi have performed excellently in all ramification.
“I want to commend our party APC, the National caretaker chairman of the All Progressives Congress, His Excellency, Mai Mala Buni and other political parties that are opposing what Mr. President is doing; they have seen what democracy is, unlike before, opposition members were never given ground to speak but Mr. President has done that in several capacities.
