IMO DEPUTY GOVERNOR GOES TO FARM, URGES IMOLITES TO EMBRACE FARMING.

The Deputy Governor of Imo state, Lady Chinyere Ihuoma Ekomaru, PhD, has called on all Imolites to make a return to farming. This is in line with Governor's earlier charge that all civil servants in the state and entire Imolites should go back to farming as he has provided the state with the enabling environment to take Agriculture seriously.

This latest call by the Imo Deputy Governor also complies with the Renewed Hope Women Agricultural Initiative Programme launched by the wife of the President, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu and anchored in the state by the wife of the Governor, Bar (Mrs) Chioma Uzodimma.

In response to the Governor's call, the Renewed Hope Women Agricultural Initiative and demonstration of her own template to Imo women on how to mitigate the ravaging food insecurity across the nation, the Imo state Deputy Governor, today, led by example, as she took the entire staff of her office to farm at the Deputy Governor's lodge, New Owerri.

At the vast land surrounding the lodge, different departments were assigned different portions of land to cultivate. The Deputy Governor practically demonstrated the act of farming to the staff, as they planted different crops ranging from casava, vegetables to maize and okra.

Lady Ekomaru, a leading example of a virtuous woman in power has earlier in the year given a template to Imo women on how to check the bedeviling food insecurity. She advised everybody to go back to the land. That women should make use of every available space in their compound to farm, stressing that the Governor, Dist. Sen. Hope Uzodimma has provided the enabling environment for us to farm and is ever ready to support everyone to succeed.

According to Lady Ekomaru, "subsistence farming is easy, less expensive, doesn't demand expanse of land and do not require formal education nor skilled labour".

The Deputy Governor, advocated for cement bag technology for those who don't have land for a garden. "With cement bags, we can plant yam, three leaf yam, tomato, okra, vegetables and so on", the Deputy Governor said.

She encouraged women to also have a backyard poultry, fish farm, rabbit farm and snailery as they do need much space. Again, as mushroom farming is presently in vogue, the Deputy Governor wants Imo women to also take advantage of it to help their families and state fight food insecurity.

The Imo Deputy Governor holds that "if every woman can farm, food insecurity would be drastically reduced if not ended.
